Day of Cyprus

Once a year, around the Feast of St. Barnabas the Apostle (11th June), Founder and Patron Saint of the Church of Cyprus, we organise a special celebration in our Community, in order to honour Cyprus, its Apostolic Church and its rich civilisation.

We start with a special Prayer in the Church, followed by a talk and then we have a social gathering at our Community premises, where we enjoy Greek hospitality and we taste delicious souvlakia.

.
The speaker this year (yesterday, Sunday 14th June 2009) was the Lecturer - Translator and Writer Dr. Zannetos Tofallis, who gave an interesting outline of the History of Cyprus, as well as its literature.

Sponsored Walk

A Sponsored Walk of 3 miles was organised today in our Community. It was the fourth year in a row that an event of this kind was organised in financial support of our efforts to build a new Church in byzantine style.

Four ladies had actually organised this event. They are: Mary Nicolaou, Mary Papapavlou, Martha Constantinou and Georgina Panayi. They also offered water for those who walked as well as refreshments for all who participated in the event.

41 people of all ages (even a baby in a pram) had taken part. Half of them have already given their sponsorship money which are about £4000. The Parish Priest Fr. Anastasios had collected £1500.
The Chairman of the Community Mr. Pantelis Demosthenous and Fr. Anastasios had at the end offered Certificates to all walkers.

Saturday of the Souls

Today it is the Saturday of the Souls. This is the Eve of Pentecost. The day is dedicated to prayers for the departed. In the morning we had in our Church a Divine Liturgy and Memorial Services.

Later on we visited our Greek Orthodox Cemetery at Pinner, NW London, where we held Memorial Services for our dead.

“O Lord, give rest to Thy servants in the city of the living, where there is neither sorrow, nor sadness, nor sighing, but life everlasting”!

Elections at our Church Hall

Euro-elections Day today in Great Britain.

Our Church Hall has always been used by the Local Authorities as a Polling Station.

The Polling Station Officers allowed us to take pictures of the Church Hall showing the relevant signs, but only from the outside.
